State senator from Everett on verge of losing seat
EVERETT -- State Sen. Jean Berkey, D-Everett, slid further behind today in her quest for re-election. And she may have lost her opportunity to defend her seat this fall.
The latest tally of ballots released this afternoon shows Berkey trailing Rod Rieger by 79 votes for the second and final spot in the November general election. That is too wide a margin to trigger an automatic recount, Snohomish County election officials said.
Today's updated results show Rieger with 6,626 votes to Berkey's total of 6,547 in the 38th Legislative District contest, which covers Everett, Tulalip and part of Marysville. Democrat Nick Harper is leading the three-person race with 7,133 votes.
Only a handful of ballots remain to be counted. The next update is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
Unless Berkey can shrink the gap with Rieger, she will lose the primary outright.
In another closely watched contest, the Everett School District levy is passing with 50.18 percent of the vote.
