Car hits tree in Monroe; woman injured

MONROE -- A Snohomish woman, 59, is in serious condition this afternoon after her car struck a tree near Woods Creek Road.

The woman was driving eastbound on Country Crescent Boulevard SE just after 10 a.m. today when her 1988 Ford Mustang went down a 15-foot embankment and struck the tree. She suffered head and leg injuries in the crash, Monroe police spokeswoman Debbie Willis said.

The woman told officials that the brakes failed, and she tried to stop the car with the emergency brake.

Firefighters cut off the Mustang's roof to free the woman. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center.

The crash is under investigation.
