Skyline grad Heaps to share quarterback duties at BYU
PROVO, Utah -- The battle for the starting quarterback job at BYU has ended in a tie.
Coach Bronco Mendenhall said junior Riley Nelson and freshman Jake Heaps will be sharing the job when the season begins next week.
The Cougars open the season Sept. 4 at home against Washington.
Mendenhall said Friday that Nelson and Heaps have different styles that will make it difficult for defenses to prepare to stop the Cougars.
Nelson backed up Max Hall last season and played in seven games.
Heaps was a high school star at Skyline High School in Sammamish and one of the top-rated quarterback recruits nationally. He enrolled early at BYU so he could participate in spring practice.
