DVD offers engaging lessons for middle school students
By the time your children enter middle school the last thing they want is for you to sit down with them and review and prepare for those grades with a DVD. Which is why you should tuck a copy of Middle School Advantage (grades six to eight) under their cell phone or iPod iTouch. Curiosity will get the better of them, and soon they will be doing exactly as you hoped they'd do -- using the DVD for a coaster as they drink their energy brew. Well, hopefully not.
If their curiosity goes in the right direction, they will load the DVD on either their PC or Macintosh computer, and become so engrossed in the program's lessons that they will forego their nightly five hours on their iPhone.
If they do the right thing, they will find more than 1,500 interactive lessons in every area a middle-schooler is likely to encounter -- math, science, social studies and language arts (English to old-timers).
They will learn or re-learn pre-algebra and algebra, geometry and data analysis, biology, plants and animals, and the components of the body, aside from an ear to listen to their iPod and a mouth to talk on their iPhone.
In social studies they'll learn about the country's wars, beginning with the Civil War, and nuggets about contemporary events.
They'll learn the basics of Spanish, French, German and Italian, along with English vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing.
There also is the Britannica Reference guide, organizers and iPod and after-school material.
The tutors are patient, the material can be revisited endlessly, the quizzes are multiple choice for the most part, and the lessons can be tailored to different levels.
Will your child take the hint? Let's hope so.
Middle School Advantage 2009 will run on all versions of Windows and current versions of OSX on the Mac. To order, send $25, plus $6 for shipping, to WashingtonCD, PO Box 351531, Los Angeles, CA 90035, or online at www.washingtoncd.net.
