Members on the Grey team celebrate after winning the shootout of the Silvertips' annual Green vs. Grey game Sunday at the Lynnwood Ice Center.

LYNNWOOD -- Alex Theriau and Markus McCrea engaged in a little good-natured competitive banter following the Everett Silvertips' Green vs. Grey game Sunday afternoon at Lynnwood Ice Center.

The Tips teammates found themselves on opposite benches for a change, and Theriau seized the opportunity to crow a little following Grey's 4-3 shootout victory over Green.

"I'm just having fun with the boys," Theriau said with a grin. "It was a nice win, we'll take it."

Josh Birkholz, Ryan McDonald and Brendan McCalpin scored the goals for Grey, McCalpin's coming with less than four minutes remaining in regulation to tie the score and force a shootout. Grey's Jari Erricson scored the decisive goal in the shootout.

Clayton Cumiskey, Ryan McDonald and McCrea scored for Green. Sunday's game, which was competitive throughout as the margin was never more than one goal, brought Everett's 2010 training camp to a close.

"It was fun," said Cumiskey, the only overager to play in the game. "It was a little bit back and forth there with a nice little shootout there at the end.

"I think all the guys are looking good," Cumiskey added. "We should just be getting into ice shape now and we should be good."

The Tips now head into their preseason schedule. Everett's first preseason game is Friday when the Tips face the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on the first day of the Holiday Inn Preseason Classic at Comcast Arena. The Tips play three games next weekend and seven exhibition games total.

Sunday's game featured a mixture of veterans and prospects. Goaltenders Thomas Heemskerk and Kent Simpson, forwards Landon Ferraro and Kellan Tochkin, and defenseman Ryan Murray were given the day off. Forward Josh Winquist sat out because of injury.

That allowed plenty of opportunity for Everett's prospects to strut their stuff, and they didn't disappoint as they held up well competing against the veterans. McDonald, who skated in the rookie scrimmages, scored the game's third goal. Fellow rookie camp participants Erricson, Darian Henry and Kohl Bauml had assists.

"The real young kids, I thought they were all good," said Everett coach Craig Hartsburg, who was observing from above rather than coaching on the bench. "They've had a busy four days, they played two games a day, but I thought they played with a lot of energy and worked hard."

Hartsburg said he was particularly impressed by the play of 16-year-old defenseman Nicholas Walters, Everett's first-round pick in the 2009 bantam draft who spent the entire camp skating with the veterans. Hartsburg also singled out the veteran forward line of Cumiskey, McCrea and Scott MacDonald for praise.

That line nearly was the difference as it gave Green the lead on the power play 6 minutes, 21 seconds into the third period. McCrea circled to the center point to find a shooting lane, then wristed a shot into the top corner to make it 3-2.

Grey waited until late in the game to tie the score. Finnish import Jesse Huhtala won the puck down low and centered it for McCalpin, who was just coming off the bench. McCalpin, a camp invitee hoping to earn a spot with the team, buried his shot to even the score with 3:16 remaining.

Grey had to hold on at the end as an Evan Morden interference penalty gave Green a power play for the final two minutes. Grey killed it off and the game went straight to a shootout.

There was a hint of controversy during the shootout. The score was tied 1-1 after three shooters, then Green's Ryan Chynoweth, Everett's top pick from this year's bantam draft, put the puck in the net with a fancy spin move. However, the goal was disallowed as Chynoweth was judged to have come to a full stop before his spin. Erricson scored on the following attempt to end the game.

Grey opened the scoring on the power play 3:31 into the game when Birkholz, Everett's summer recruit from the University of Minnesota, scored in close. Green matched that at 15:32 when Cumiskey poked home a rebound after MacDonald threw the puck toward goal from behind the net, and it was 1-1 going into the second period.

The teams traded goals again in the second. Grey regained the lead at 1:53, McDonald putting a shot into the top corner after Bauml found him unmarked in front. Then Green tied it again at 11:53, Regier blowing a one-timer through traffic past Grey goalie Austin Lotz, knotting it at 2-2.
