EVERETT — No one was seriously hurt in a harrowing bus crash on I-5 this morning in south Everett.

Credit the cool, calm actions of the Everett Transit driver.

Bart Simpson didn't fare as well.

At about 9:45 a.m., Brandon Davis, a salesman from Seattle, was northbound on I-5 with his colleague, Les Lewis. Suddenly, a sedan driving in the fast lane swerved across the freeway and nearly collided with another car driving in front of the two men.

The sedan rocketed back across the interstate, slamming into an Everett Transit bus. The car's nose was squashed into an advertisement on the side of the bus that featured cartoon characters Bart Simpson, Bobby Hill, Eric Cartman and Stewie Griffin.

“That car stuck in the bus like a dart,” Davis said.

Davis and Lewis stopped, called 911 and offered what help they could. They also snapped a picture.

Everyone appeared to be OK, they said. The driver of the sedan appeared to have minor injuries and seemed confused about what happened, Davis said.

Davis believed there were commuters on the bus.

Steffani Lillie, a spokeswoman for Everett Transit, said no passengers were on the bus, which was heading from the Everett Mall to the Everett Station to start a route. The crash occurred near the 75th Street overpass.

She said the driver was seasoned but declined to name him.

“His training and experience did kick in and keep the incident from becoming worse,” she said.

Both men said it's amazing that no one was seriously hurt. Traffic on northbound I-5 at the time was heavy and moving quickly.

The bus driver maintained control after the collision, easing the big rig to the shoulder with a car stuck to its side.

“The bus driver's reactions were just phenomenal, very professional,” Lewis said. “He had a nice cool, calm head.”
