Cooking fire forces tenants from Everett apartment

EVERETT -- Five people were displaced Monday night after a cooking fire on the 12400 block of Fourth Avenue W.

Just after 7 p.m., a tenant in a second-floor apartment was heating oil on the stove when the pan caught fire. Flames quickly spread to the microwave and cabinets nearby.

The apartment complex's sprinkler system turned on and put out the fire, said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1.

The unit where the fire started and the unit below it sustained water damage, she said.

"It would have been a lot worse without the sprinklers," she said.

Fire investigators were at the scene Monday night. Damage was estimated at $10,000.

The American Red Cross was called to help those displaced.
