Nyassi called home to play for Gambia

RENTON -- Sanna Nyassi will be playing soccer on Saturday, just not for the Seattle Sounders FC.

The Sounders announced Monday that the Gambia national team has called in Nyassi, a midfielder, for Saturday's African Cup of Nations qualifier with Namibia in Banjul, Gambia.

Nyassi will miss Seattle's U.S. Open Cup semifinal against Chivas USA on Wednesday and the team's Major League Soccer match Saturday at New England. He is expected to return to Seattle on Sept. 6.

Nyassi has started the past six MLS matches and eight altogether this season. He has three assists in 17 appearances.

Montero honored

Sounders FC forward Fredy Montero has been voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR).

Montero scored the first goal against the Chicago Fire on Saturday to tie the score 1-1 in the 36th minute. His second goal came in second-half stoppage time and gave the Sounders a 2-1 victory.

It's the second player-of-the-week award in Montero's career. He also won the MLS Player of the Month award for July.

Montero is the second Sounder to be named player of the week this season. Forward Steve Zakuani won the award in July.

The Sounders are unbeaten over their past seven MLS games (5-0-2). Montero has five goals and three assists in that span.
