Stanwood write-in candidate moves on to general election
STANWOOD -- Democrat Laura Lewis of Stanwood appears to have picked up enough write-in votes to earn a spot on the November ballot.
Lewis, the vice chairwoman of the Snohomish County Democratic Party, is looking to challenge Rep. Norma Smith, R-Clinton, in the 10th Legislative District.
Smith was the only name on the primary ballot for the district's voters living in Island County, northwest Snohomish County and southwest Skagit County
Under the state's top two primary system, Lewis will qualify as the second highest finisher and face Smith in the general election if she receives at least 1 percent of all votes cast in the legislative race.
A little more than 28,000 votes were tallied, according to final results released Wednesday. That means Lewis will need around 280.
Lewis appeared to have received 933 votes, according to information compiled by election officials in Island, Snohomish and Skagit counties.
The Secretary of State's Office will review the data from the counties and determine for certain how many of those votes for Lewis are valid. It may take until after Labor Day to complete the work, state election workers said.
Lewis is the only declared write-in candidate in the race but her name was not the only one voters chose to pen onto their ballots for the seat.
Among the dozens of names, former Seattle Mariner manager Don Wakamatsu received a vote, Donald Duck got two and Mike the Mover, who ran for U.S. Senate, got five.
