One Mississippi, two Mississippi: Researchers say that about 1 in 7 home kitchens would fail the kind of health department inspection routinely required of restaurants. Only 61 percent of homes in Los Angeles County would earn an A or B grade, researchers said, compared with 98 percent of restaurants in the county.

Not surprisingly, the 14 percent of homes that wouldn't pass inspection were the same homes where the 5-second rule is in force.
