Some food for thought

This is Ground Control to Col. Sanders: Astronaut Chris Hadfield will be the first Canadian commander of the International Space Station when he lifts off in December 2012.

In preparation for Hadfield's command, NASA scientists are busy developing a method for freeze-drying poutine, Canada's national dish of french fries and cheese curds smothered in chicken gravy.

  • PETA wants a large vegetarian: Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan has joined Bill Gates and Warren Buffett in their billionaires' charity drive and has pledged to donate at least half of his fortune to charitable causes.

Even better, charities will get a free large pepperoni pizza if donations aren't delivered in 30 minutes or less.

  • One Mississippi, two Mississippi: Researchers say that about 1 in 7 home kitchens would fail the kind of health department inspection routinely required of restaurants. Only 61 percent of homes in Los Angeles County would earn an A or B grade, researchers said, compared with 98 percent of restaurants in the county.

Not surprisingly, the 14 percent of homes that wouldn't pass inspection were the same homes where the 5-second rule is in force.
