Snohomish to improve water service with grant
SNOHOMISH-- The city now has more money to spend making it more attractive for developers.
The city recently was awarded $100,000 from state Department of Commerce and the Puget Sound Regional Council to make land more appealing for development.
The city will use the money to install and expand water service in an 86-acre area, which roughly stretches west from Union Avenue to the Pilchuck River, and south from 6th Street to Wood Street.
The area currently has neighborhoods, a senior center and the police department.
Upgrading the water mains now, to handle more customers in the future, is cheaper and makes it easier to plan for development.
"The land becomes more attractive," planning director Corbitt Loch said.
The city also changed other zoning rules to allow more curbside parking and taller buildings in the area, Loch said.
Other cities that received similar grants included Everett, Arlington and Mountlake Terrace. The grants varied from $30,000 to $130,000.
