Tri-City skates by Silvertips

Amercians score winning goal with 37.7 seconds to play

EVERETT -- For the second straight night the Everett Silvertips were on the verge of a compelling third-period comeback.

But blink for a moment and the lightning-quick Tri-City Americans have a way of making a team pay, and the Tips blinked Saturday night.

Tri-City scored the game-winning goal with 37.7 seconds remaining in the third period -- a mere 22 seconds after Everett had tied it -- and the Americans beat the Tips 6-5 on day two of the Holiday Inn Preseason Classic.

In a game that featured the two teams that tied for the best record in the U.S. Division last season, Adam Hughesman hacked a loose puck that looped over Everett goaltender Luke Siemens, silencing a Comcast Arena crowd that was in a frenzy just moments earlier.

Hughesman's goal capped a wild third period in which Everett scored twice to tie the score, Tri-City regained the lead, then the Tips tied it again.

"We've had a lot of those in this building, haven't we?" Tri-City coach Jim Hiller said of Saturday's wild ride. "I think we saw two teams, just like last year, that both skate really well and compete really hard. I think it's going to be like this all year."

Brooks Macek scored a hat trick for Tri-City, which is 2-0 in the tournament. Tyler Schmidt and Kruise Reddick also scored for the Americans, while Drew Owsley stopped 24 shots in net for Tri-City.

Scott MacDonald scored twice -- his second straight two-goal game -- and Landon Ferraro had a goal and two assists for Everett, which played in spurts in falling to 1-1 in the preseason. Markus McCrea and Tyler Maxwell also scored for the Tips.

Thomas Heemskerk and Siemens split goaltending duties for the Tips, who rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Sault Ste. Marie 3-2 Friday. Heemskerk stopped 18 of 22 and Siemens saved 17 of 19.

"We're not staying with the game right now," Everett coach Craig Hartsburg said. "We go four or five minutes playing the right way, then we fall away from it and make too many turnovers or don't defend. I think right now we're not mentally sharp for 60 minutes. That's something we have to learn through training camp, that if you want to be a good team in this league you need to be that."

As with any early preseason game teams are going to encounter issues that need to be ironed out. For Everett, on Friday the issue was odd-man rushes against. On Saturday it was stick penalties. The Tips took five hooking penalties and one tripping penalty, and in total Everett handed Tri-City 10 power plays. The Americans converted twice with the advantage.

"It was ridiculous," Hartsburg said of the stick penalties. "Some of them were new players in the league who maybe aren't used to those standards. It's a learning process for them, they have to learn you can't do that. Exhibition games are a learning process for everybody. There were some good things in the game and then some things we certainly didn't like."

The second of Tri-City's power-play goals broke a 4-4 tie with 5:49 remaining. Macek received the puck in the left circle, then sniped a shot past Siemens at the near post to give the Americans the lead.

The Tips thought they'd gotten themselves to overtime with a power-play goal of their own with 1:00 remaining. Ferraro sent a nice cross-crease feed to Maxwell, who had plenty of time to control and finish at the far post and make it 5-5.

But Tri-City came right back, and Hughesman got the decisive stick to the puck during a mad scramble in front of the Everett goal.

The Tips needed a third-period comeback after Tri-City scored four straight goals in the second to take a 4-2 lead. Yet Everett pulled it off. Ferraro scored a beauty 1:40 into the period to pull the Tips back within one, blowing though the middle of the Tri-City defense before finishing around Owsley. Then the Tips tied it at 11:22, MacDonald arcing in from the right circle and shoveling a backhander in off the underside of the crossbar.

Earlier games

In the day's opener, Spokane scored twice in the final seven minutes of regulation to tie the score, then won it in overtime as the Chiefs overcame the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-3. Levko Koper scored the game-winner, and Tyler Vanscourt added a goal and an assist for Spokane. Tyler Alos had a goal and an assist to lead Seattle. ... In the second game Portland rallied from a four-goal deficit, then Tyler Wotherspoon's overtime goal gave the Winterhawks a 6-5 victory over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. Oliver Gabriel added a goal and two assists for Portland. Brett Thompson scored twice for the Greyhounds.
