Lynnwood girl injured in fall from second-floor window

LYNNWOOD -- A 5-year-old girl was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries Sunday after falling from a second-floor bedroom window at a north Lynnwood apartment.

Fire officials say the girl fell about 15 feet onto hard dirt below the window. She was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

"The screen was still in the window with the bottom corner popped out where the girl fell through. Screens can't support the weight of even a small child," said Leslie Hynes, a spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1.

The incident happened about 7 p.m. at an apartment in the 14500 block of Admiralty Way.

An update of the girl's condition was not available Sunday night.

The girl is the third child who has fallen out of a window this summer in Fire District 1's coverage area, Hynes said.

"We urge parents of young children to exercise caution when the weather is warm and windows are open," she said.

Hynes offered the following tips: Keep furniture away from windows; close and lock all windows that children can reach; consider installing window guards; and supervise children around any open windows.
