EVERETT -- There's two things the Everett Silvertips learned about themselves during this weekend's Holiday Inn Preseason Classic.

First, the Tips know how to stage a third period comeback.

Second, they need to figure out how not to put themselves in that position in the first place.

Everett scored three goals in three minutes early in the third period Sunday night, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat the Seattle Thunderbirds 4-3 in the tournament finale at Comcast Arena.

Kellan Tochkin was the catalyst for Everett's comeback, scoring the tying goal and setting up the game-winner.

And it was a similar story all three nights for the Tips. Everett trailed by two goals in the third period of all three contests. The Tips rallied to beat Sault Ste. Marie 3-2 in their opener, then fought back to tie Tri-City on Saturday before eventually falling 6-5.

"Good teams find a way to win," Tochkin said. "It's not how we're going to be playing during the season, obviously, we're going to be a three-period team. But I thought we showed a lot of heart coming back in all three games."

Jari Erricson, Scott MacDonald and Tyler Maxwell also scored for Everett. MacDonald's goal gave him five in Everett's three games, making him the leading goal scorer of the tournament. Kent Simpson earned the win in goal for the Tips, making 22 saves.

Luke Lockhart, Charles Wells and Mitch Elliot scored during a second-period blitz for Seattle, which came out hitting from the start. Calvin Pickard started in goal for the T-birds and saved all 15 shots he faced before giving way to Matt Krahn. Krahn, stopped nine of 13 and took the loss.

Everett found itself in familiar territory when the third period began, trailing 3-1. But the Tips didn't waste any time making their comeback this time. The Tips received an early power play and cashed in 1 minute, 27 seconds into the period, MacDonald scoring on a rebound to get Everett back in the contest.

The Tips tied it less than a minute later. A loose puck squirted free ahead of the path of Tochkin, who had a partial breakaway down the right. Tochkin skated in and buried a shot into the far corner to tie it at 2:20.

Everett completed the dramatic turnaround with another power-play goal at 4:28. Skating four-on-three, Tochkin faked a shot and instead centered for Maxwell, who redirected the puck in at the far post to give the Tips a lead that they held until the final horn.

If strong third periods sounds familiar, it should. Everett won several games early last season on the strength of its third-period play.

"We started last year like this, too," Everett coach Craig Hartsburg recalled. "I think it says something about our conditioning level, which is a positive. But I think the first two periods maybe our mental conditioning needs a little work. The mistakes we made and the desperation level we played at in the first two periods wasn't very good. But in the third period we cranked it up a bit."

The weekend gave Hartsburg his first opportunity to see how his team performed in game situations. While he thought his team's focus level needs to improve, he was pleased with the performances of some of Everett's younger players, particularly a pair of 16-year-olds in Erricson and defenseman Nicholas Walters.

"We played everybody's best this weekend, we had three really intense games, and the best thing for us is how our young guys played," Hartsburg said. "Walters, for a 16-year-old, was really good all weekend. And tonight maybe one of the best players on the ice was Jari Erricson. Now you see that those guys might be able to fit in certain situations and really help us."

After the teams traded goals in the second period, Seattle surged ahead on a pair of nice tip goals. Wells tipped a Scott Ramsay shot past Simpson at 12:36 to restore Seattle's lead, and Elliot got a piece of Dillon's shot from the high slot at 18:49, giving the T-birds a 3-1 lead heading into the third.

Slap shots

Prior to the game Everett reassigned forwards Kohl Bauml and Ryan Chynoweth and defenseman Darian Henry. That leaves Everett with 28 players: 16 forwards, eight defensemen and four goaltenders. ... In Sunday's first game Spokane scored twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation to tie it, then won in a shootout as the Chiefs defeated the Portland Winterhawks 3-2. Anthony Bardaro scored the tying goal, then scored in the shootout for Spokane. ... Brett Thompson scored two goals and Brett Findlay added a goal and three assists as the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds topped the Tri-City Americans 6-2 in the afternoon contest. ... Final standings: Portland 2-0-0-1, Tri-City 2-1-0-0, Everett 2-1-0-0, Spokane 2-1-0-0, Sault Ste. Marie 1-1-1-0, Seattle 0-2-1-0.
