Woman dies in crash on Highway 20 near Coupeville
COUPEVILLE — A 26-year-old Anacortes woman died in an early morning traffic accident Friday on Highway 20, about five miles south of Coupeville, the Washington State Patrol reported.
The two-car collision occurred around 6 a.m. and closed a stretch of the state highway for three hours while troopers investigated the accident scene.
The woman was identified as Alexis M. Gilman. She was driving a 1997 Volkswagen convertible southbound when the car crossed the centerline while going around a curve, Trooper Keith Leary said.
The car collided head-on with a northbound 2001 Chevrolet pickup.
Dean A. Tucker, 52, of Coupeville, was driving the pickup and was taken by ambulance to Whidbey General Hospital in Coupeville.
Leary said the road conditions were wet and foggy.
“With the weather changing, it is very important for drivers to slow their speeds down and drive carefully when fog exists,” Leary said. “Pockets of fog can lay in valleys and low areas and can catch drivers by surprise.”
