Poll says red-light cameras effective

A majority of drivers say their driving habits are influenced by red-light enforcement cameras, according to a poll by a Seattle auto insurance company.

Of the 635 people who voted in the online poll, 55 percent said the cameras influence their behavior when traffic signals turn yellow.

The poll was done by FBK Research of Seattle for PEMCO Insurance and was sent out to a sampling of licensed Washington drivers.

In other findings, 64 percent of the respondents believe traffic cameras are at least somewhat effective in reducing violations.

That belief didn't necessarily translate to believing more cameras should be installed, according to the poll. Thirty-one percent of those polled supported more cameras in the areas where they drive, while another 31 percent said the number of existing cameras is “about right.” And 29 percent said fewer or no cameras should be installed.

Seattle and Lynnwood have installed enforcement cameras, and the measure has been considered in other cities, such as Mukilteo.
