UW shares federal grant for climate research center

BOISE, Idaho — The federal government is giving three Northwest universities $3.6 million over the next five years to collaborate on climate science and ecology.

U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced the grant Thursday for the University of Idaho, Oregon State University and the University of Washington.

The schools will cooperate to form the Northwest Regional Climate Science Center. It’s goal will be to support research and help natural resource officials better manage and adapt to climate change.

University of Idaho President Duane Nellis says the grant and the research that emerges from the center will have a significant influence on state industries and public agencies that oversee natural resources across the three-state region.
