Distracted driver caused Highway 9 crash, police say

CATHCART — A driver looking at her cell phone appears to have caused a head-on collision Thursday night on Highway 9.

A Snohomish girl, 17, was driving a Honda Civic about 8 p.m. when she reportedly crossed the center line near 168th Street SE, west of Cathcart. She struck a four-door Mercedes head-on, said Keith Leary, a trooper with the Washington State Patrol.

The Mercedes was driven by a Snohomish woman, 55.

Both drivers were taken to a local hospital as a precaution for minor injuries.

The highway was closed in both directions for about an hour.

Leary reminds drivers to focus on the road, as distractions inside or outside the vehicle can cause serious-injury crashes.
