LAKEWOOD — A celebration is planned to mark the reopening of the playground at Lake Goodwin Community Park.
Neighbors and families who used the playground equipment destroyed by a July fire can be part of a dedication of the rebuilt playground at 4 p.m. Oct. 27. Snohomish County executive Aaron Reardon will speak during the event at the park located at 4620 Lakewood Road.
Investigators determined the cause of the fire set the morning of July 26 was arson. The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office is conducting an investigation.
The fire caused an estimated $100,000 in damages and destroyed a popular two-story pirate ship structure. The playground was reopened in mid-September with donated equipment from Kompan and High Wire Inc. About $30,000 in cash and equipment donations were made by individuals and businesses who wanted to see the playground used again and included the Lake Goodwin Community Club, the Pam Moffett Memorial Fund, Silvana Meats, Stanwood Haggen Foods, Stanwood QFC and Thrasher’s Corner Pub and Grill Benefit Golf Tournament.
Reardon, Snohomish County staff and the community worked to get the playground reopened as quickly as possible, according to Snohomish County Parks director Tom Teigen.
“We feel like everyone got involved, it was wonderful,” Teigen said.
The playground includes new bark chips and elements such as a fire truck play structure. Additional donations are needed if people want the pirate ship to be rebuilt, Teigen added.
“At this point what we want to do is talk to the public and let folks hang out and play on it,” he said. “If folks really want the pirate ship back specifically then we need to do some fundraising.”
Donations for playground improvements are still being accepted and can be sent to Snohomish County Parks, 6705 Puget Park Drive, Snohomish, WA 98296, with “Lake Goodwin Community Park Playground” specified.
