Frogboxes make moving easier, greener
If you’ve moved recently, you’ll likely agree that finding any way to limit the hassle is well worth it.
Recently, Frogbox, a company based in Vancouver, B.C., got an idea that eliminates some moving headaches and helps cuts down on waste, adding some green to the moving experience.
The company rents out reusable plastic containers, reptile green, to people who are packing up to move.
Snohomish businessman Jeff Hill helped bring the business to the U.S. Now, he said, he spends a lot of time explaining those frog-green boxes.
Frogbox is an exhibitor at the Everett Fall Home & Gift Show. Hill said the boxes are convenient, affordable and, most of all, environmentally sustainable since they are reused.
Cardboard boxes and paper products are a huge problem in landfills, Hill said. Frogbox produces nearly no waste.
Instead of buying one-time-use cardboard boxes, people rent the plastic Frogboxes, which are delivered and picked up by a fleet of biodiesel trucks. There’s no need for packaging tape and no worry that the boxes may weaken and fall apart in a Pacific Northwest drizzle. The hard plastic boxes make for faster moving since they’re easier to stack in the back of a moving van, Hill said.
Homeowners and businesses work with the professionals at Frogbox to determine how many boxes they need, then schedule the delivery and pickup. The standard size box is about 2.4 cubic feet, and the company also has plastic wardrobe boxes.
It costs $3.50 to rent one standard box for a week, or $6 for three weeks. It costs about $150 to rent enough boxes for a week to move a three-bedroom home.
The only downside is that once you move, you have to unpack so the Frogboxes can be picked up or pay an additional fee.
Still, Hill said Frogboxes are cheaper, cleaner and greener than buying cardboard boxes and packing tape.
Hill also will have a booth at the Home & Gift Show for 1-800-Got-Junk, a handy business that picks up big loads and loads of accumulated trash. For a fee, 1-800-Got-Junk will clean out a garage, basement or attic full of appliances, luggage, old newspapers, whatever garbage has accumulated over the years.
They sort through it and send as much as possible to charities and recycling centers to avoid putting as much as possible into landfills.
