Sharpen work skills with classes at EdCC

LYNNWOOD — Registration for winter quarter classes at Edmonds Community College starts Nov. 15. Winter classes run Jan. 3 through March 18.

The college is offering a number of classes this winter that will prepare employees with on-the-job expertise.

Take classes and prepare to be the expert on energy efficiency, emergency management, quality control, project management, event coordination or QuickBooks at your business.

There’s also a limited-time opportunity this winter to earn a short certificate in Energy Management at no cost. The Sound Energy Efficiency Development (SEED) grant pays tuition, books and fees for students. Earn short certificates to gain skills as an energy efficiency technician, residential energy auditor, commercial lighting auditor or energy accounting specialist. In addition, students in the program will receive assistance with their job search and have opportunities to participate in events where they can meet energy employers. Here are details on some upcoming winter classes:

CAPM Exam Preparation, Business Management 255, meets 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays. Three credits. Cost: $261 plus admission and fees. Prepare for the Project Management Institute’s (PMI) professional project management exam for CAPM or PMP certification. EdCC is a PMI-registered education provider. This course offers strategies to prepare for the CAPM Exam by reviewing the Project Management Body of Knowledge concepts and terms. Learn valuable test-taking skills.

Project Management, Business Management 270, meets 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and online (hybrid class). Five credits. Cost: $435 plus admission and fees. Learn the basics of working in a project team. Create plans that identify project scope, constraints, stakeholders and risks, then explore customer needs and requirements. Includes an introduction to scheduling. Team and communication skills emphasized.

QuickBooks for Beginners, Accounting 155, Mondays, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Jan. 3 through Feb. 14. Three credits. Cost: $333.50 plus admission and fees. For businesses with limited experience using QuickBooks. Learn to set up files for a new company, create users, add customer and vendor lists, develop charts of accounts receivable and payments, make bank reconciliations and use the general journal. The last day to register for this class is Jan. 14.

Emergency Planning, Emergency Management 130, online class. Three credits. Cost: $306.65 plus admission and fees. Learn to develop, implement and maintain emergency operations plans and procedures. The class provides an overview of stakeholders involved such as fire and law enforcement, first responders, business, government and nonprofit and volunteer groups.

Emergency Business Continuity, Emergency Management 180, online class. Four credits. Cost: $393.65 plus admission and fees. This class uses the Business Continuity Institute’s Good Practice Guidelines to create a business impact analysis for an organization including identifying risks of business interruption and identifying critical functions for a business continuity management plan.

Event Coordination, Hospitality and Tourism 250, online class. Five credits. Cost: $480.65 plus admission and fees. The class provides an overview of event planning including types of meetings and events, site location and suitability, logistics of the planning process, market and sales research, and careers in the event planning industry.

Sustainable-Green Events, Hospitality and Tourism 245, online class. Two credits. Cost: $219.65 plus admission and fees. Learn sustainable practices that promote environmentally responsible decisions in event planning.

Introduction to Metrology, Materials Science Technology 120, the class and lab meets 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays. Five credits. Cost: $473 plus admission and fees. Get an introduction to measuring to gain quality-control skills in manufacturing.
