Repairs to close Sultan bridge for 10 days
SULTAN Residents who live south of the Skykomish River Slough trying to drive downtown will spend more time getting there this holiday season.
The 90-foot-long bridge at 311 Ave. SE will be closed for 10 days starting at 7:30 a.m., Dec. 20. The bridge will be dismantled so workers can replace support beams and portions of the timber deck.
Residents living south of the bridge will be detoured through Monroe on Ben Howard and Lewis roads to reach U.S. 2.
Its a long detour, said Tina Hokanson, spokeswoman for the Snohomish County public works department.
The two-lane bridge is not dangerous to cross, but the county has a policy of repairing bridges when they show signs of deterioration. The repair is budgeted at $64,400.
There is never a good time to close a bridge, but the department decided to do the work now because it has the manpower and funding, and the schools will be on winter break, Hokanson said.
Almost 600 postcards have been sent to residents living in the area to inform them of the closure. In 2008, an average of 2,000 vehicles used the bridge every day according to countys data.
