Boeing lends Gregoire a boost on UI bill

In a rare move, the Boeing Co. tonight issued a press release endorsing Gov. Chris Gregoire's bill to block a planned increase in unemployment insurance taxes.
The three-paragraph statement reads:
We commend the governor for her work to bring relief to Washington state businesses and workers impacted by unemployment and a very difficult economic situation.
The governor's unemployment insurance proposals are linked to competitiveness. Near-term solutions to lower rates, and longer term measures will increase support and opportunities for unemployed workers, and provide stability in the system, both of which will benefit the state going forward.
We hope the legislature will heed her call for swift action and move to pass the governor's bills as introduced before the Feb. 8 deadline.
Boeing's release arrived hours after Gregoire used a morning news conference to again urge state lawmakers to get the bill passed and to her for signing by Feb. 8. Any later and programmed increases in taxes will take effect.
The legislation is spelled out in House Bill 1090 and Senate Bill 5135. Another bill, HB 1091 would extend this year's tax reduction well into the future.
Boeing backs all the bills.
While the bill would certainly be good for the mega-company's bottom line, Gregoire told reporters several times today that the biggest winners will be tens of thousands of small businesses.
