1995: Honor roll student Jayme Biendl graduates from Granite Falls High School.
2003: Biendl begins work as a correctional officer at Monroe Correctional Complex.
2005: Biendl receives new post in the prison chapel.
2008: Biendl is named the prison's Correctional Officer of the Year.
Jan. 29: Biendl is found strangled in the prison chapel. Inmate Byron Sherf, 52 and serving a life term, is arrested. A homicide investigation starts.
Jan. 31: Gov. Chris Gregoire promises to get questions answered and determine whether there is adequate staffing at the state's prisons.
Feb. 1: Monroe Correctional Complex Superintendent Scott Frakes says he will make changes at the prison after reviewing all security practices and programs for inmates. He said he continues to search for a work order that Biendl reportedly placed on her sergeant's desk requesting additional cameras in the chapel.
Feb. 8: An estimated 3,500 corrections officers, police officers and State Patrol troopers from across the country and Canada, as well as local citizens, attend Biendl's memorial service at Comcast Arena. During the service, Corrections Secretary Eldon Vail promised: “The tragic loss of Jayme Biendl must be followed by an honest discussion of prison safety.”
