Sultan schedules meeting to discuss water rates
SULTAN -- The city's aging water and sewer lines need to be replaced.
The question is how the city will pay for it. The answer is that ratepayers may be tapped to pay more.
The utility lines were built between 1920 and 1970. The city serves about 1,500 water and sewer customers. The City Council will discuss possible rate increases at a meeting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Council Chambers, 319 Main St.
Sewer rates could have the biggest jump. Sewer rate payers could see their monthly bill increase from $74.47 to somewhere between $80.95 and $99.05.
Water rates also can increase from $36.91 to somewhere between $41.06 to $47.61.
A decision is not expected at this meeting.
The council will finalize any rate increases at its March 10 meeting and could vote to adopt them on March 24. The increases wouldn't go into effect until 2013.
Connection fees also may be changed. The sewer connection fee could be increased to $13,606 from $11,282. The water connection fee, however, could be decreased to $2,498 from $6,199.
