Good news from New Zealand for Silvana resident

Betty Sehlke of Silvana received news from a distant relative in New Zealand where a February earthquake in Christchurch did major damage. Phone service was out after the quake, but Adelia Hallett was finally able to locate all of her family, who were shaken, figuratively and literally.

"My former uncle and his wife live in a suburb that was badly hit," Hallett wrote. "Their house was destroyed and they were lucky to get out with cuts and bruises."

The offices of the Christchurch newspaper, the Press, collapsed, she wrote.

"At least one person died and others were trapped. My best friend's husband (known her since we were 8) works there and was unaccounted for for some hours. Turns out he was at lunch at the time and left his cellphone in his desk. It took him hours to walk home. Meanwhile, his wife used a bicycle to get through the police cordon to try and find him."

Hallett wrote that her sister lives north of Christchurch in a rural area. She said the shaking was much worse than a 7.1 earthquake in September.

"Her husband is a telephone technician and was supposed to be working in the part of the central city that was badly hit, but was home sick yesterday," Hallett wrote. "And my cousin Asher left Christchurch just an hour or two before the earthquake bound for Singapore. So some lucky escapes."
