MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — In an early showdown between the Wesco South’s top two baseball teams, Jackson (5-0 league, 8-0 overall) got the better of Edmonds-Woodway with a 10-5 victory Tuesday to remain undefeated atop the league standings.
Nick Kiel started for the Timberwolves and pitched well,
going six innings and allowing four runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking four.
In fact, Kiel had a shutout going through five innings as Jackson built an 8-0 lead. It wasn’t until the Warriors’ Alex Hull hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to begin a four-run outburst, that the Edmonds-Woodway (2-1, 5-1) offense finally broke through against Kiel.
Senior Kyle Olson, who finished 3-for-5 with three RBI, got things started early for Jackson. The Timberwolves scored a run in the first and three more in the second to put the Warriors on their heels early.
“Jackson just came out and hit the ball and applied pressure on us,” Edmonds-Woodway head coach Dan Somoza said. “Kiel pitched really good. If you hit and get good pitching, you’re going to play well.”
Jackson got further support from senior Anthony Flatt, who finished 2-for-4 with two doubles.
The Warriors, meanwhile, were led by Hull who finished 2-for-4 with the home run.
“The number one thing for our team is to play our game and keep working hard,” Somoza said. “We have just got to learn how to win and that comes along as the season goes on.”
