Prep boys soccer: Jackson 1, Snohomish 0 (SO)
EVERETT — Jackson freshman Cameron Laird scored the game-winning goal in a shootout that lasted eight kickers apiece as the Timberwolves beat Snohomish 1-0 Monday night.
Laird, a midfielder, kicked to the right, the ball deflecting off of the fingertips of Snohomish keeper Brenden George and into the goal.
Despite both goalies consistently having their hands, and sometimes just fingers, on the ball in the first four kicks from both squads, they didn’t make a stop until Jackson goalie Armando Huerta blocked the fifth kick from the Panthers. With the potential to clinch the game for Jackson with the fifth kick, Caleb Houvener stepped up and kicked a ball right down the middle. It was easily secured by George, who kept his team alive until the eighth and game-ending kick by Laird.
“The game was evenly matched, possession was about fifty percent on both sides. Most of the shots were off target,” said Jackson head coach Brett Norton about the play during regulation and during the two overtimes. “I can only think of a handful of shots where the goalies were actually challenged. The game was there for the taking for either team.”
Jackson (6-0 league, 7-0 overall) continues its undefeated season, and may move up in the state rankings from the No. 5 position they currently hold.
Norton said his team had to deal with a great deal of adversity forced upon them by a tough Snohomish (4-3, 4-4) team. “I thought they had a very strong midfield, very well conditioned. They definitely outhustled us to balls, and they were very well coached,” Norton said.
