Sweat it out for St. Jude’s at Mill Creek fitness challenge

A Mill Creek business owner is bringing out the community’s competitive spirit to raise $3,000 for the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Seattle. Sporting superhero costumes is optional.

Jake Terry, owner of Outer Edge CrossFit gym, is hosting the St. Jude Challenge on April 16 at his Mill Creek store.

St. Jude is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children, and no child is turned away because of their family’s inability to pay for treatment.

Terry said that policy persuaded him to help. From a business owner’s point of view, he admires the organization for doing something that would shutter his business.

“For an organization to succeed with that approach, it is worth it to help them,” he said.

A few months ago, Terry was approached by St. Jude officials to organize a fundraiser.

Mill Creek is an ideal area to rally support for a good cause as it is a tight-knit community, Terry said. To that effect, Lululemon Athletica staff, a fitness clothing store with locations in Mill Creek and Lynnwood, is helping promote the challenge and formed a team to compete.

Participants can compete solo or on a team. The challenge aims to accommodate all fitness levels.

“It’s a fun way to sweat,” said Casey Brown, Lululemon store manager.

In the A-Challenge, competitors must jump from the ground on to a box 100 times, run 1 mile and complete 100 burpees -- which requires dropping to a push-up, standing and then jumping. The B-Challenge has competitors double the amount of box jumps, miles ran and burpees completed.

Wearing a superhero costume is encouraged to represent the bold spirit of St. Jude’s young patients.

Participants can register for sessions at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. or 2 p.m. on April 16. Each session is limited to 20 participants.

Competitors also are encouraged to raise additional money for St. Jude’s and bring the fundraising envelope the day of the challenge. Prizes will be given for most money raised, those who raised additional funds and best costume.
