Everett police honor officers, citizens

EVERETT -- They stopped bad guys and helped victims.
The Everett Police Department honored officers and civilians last month at its annual awards ceremony at the Everett Performing Arts Center.
All 50 awards went to people whose "outstanding efforts" helped save lives or keep neighborhoods safe, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.
For example, officer Stephen Ross was on duty early one morning in February 2010 when a suspect wanted by Snohomish County sheriff's deputies went running past.
Ross attempted to run after the man, but the pursuit ended in a chain reaction of crashes. Ross was struck and went flying through the air for nearly 20 feet before falling onto asphalt, Goetz said. His injuries took months to heal.
Ross was awarded a Purple Heart, just one of the awards given out.
Other key awards included detective Karen Kowalchyk for Investigator of the Year and Sgt. Dan O'Neill for Supervisor of the Year. Officer Jeffrey Pountain was given the Brian DiBucci Award. The award, named for an Everett officer who died in the line of duty, is given to a younger patrol officer who excels.
