Community roundup: Everett boats take first

ERA men's varsity eight, and nine other boats win; three boats head to nationals

The men's varsity eight from the Everett Rowing Association placed first Saturday at the USRowing Northwest Junior Regional Championships on Vancouver Lake in Vancouver.

The boat, coached by Bill Clifford, included Austin Bentley (Kamiak High School), Sam Helms (Snohomish), Philip Walczak (Archbishop Murphy), Alex Engel (Snohomish), Beau Skalley (Archbishop Murphy), Alex Walczak (Archbishop Murphy), Martin Forde (Archbishop Murphy), Cole Borseth (Archbishop Murphy*) and coxswain Charles Forrest (Everett Community College).

Everett won the six-boat final, finishing .61 seconds ahead of the runner-up, the Mount Baker Rowing Club of Seattle.

Also winning for Everett was the men's varsity lightweight eight, the men's varsity pair, the men's novice eight, the men's novice four, the 2 men's novice four, the 2 men's lightweight four, the women's second varsity eight (JV), the women's novice eight and the 2 women's varsity four.

Everett also had boats that won four silver medals and two bronze medals.

The USRowing Youth National Championships are scheduled for June 10-12 at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Everett will be sending the men's varsity eight, the men's varsity lightweight eight and the men's varsity pair.

Lacrosse

Eight players from the Snohomish Lacrosse Club earned all-state honors last week when the Washington Schoolgirls Lacrosse Association announced its 2011 first and second teams.

Snohomish, one of the larger clubs in the state, fielded teams at both the Division I and II levels this spring.

The Snohomish players recognized included attacker Meaghan Hess (Division I, first team), defender Chelsea Hultz (Division I, second team), defender Mahea Wong (Division I, second team), attacker Stephanie Lamphere (Division I, second team), goalkeeper Jessica Toy (Division II, first team), attacker Kaya Reilly (Division II, first team), defender Holly Ruiz (Division II, second team) and midfielder Megan Davis (Division II, second team).

Also named all-state were two players from the Mukilteo Lacrosse Club: defender Karli Iseman (Division II, first team) and attacker Sierra Shaw (Division II, second team).

Hess a senior from Lake Stevens High School, earned all-state honors for the third time. Reilly, a senior from Snohomish High School, and Shaw, a junior from Kamiak, are two-time selections.

Softball

Portland State second baseman Carly McEachran, a graduate of Jackson High School, has been named the Pacific Coast Softball Conference's Mountain Division co-Most Valuable Player.

McEachran shared the honor with Kelli Henderson, a pitcher-utility player from Northern Colorado.

McEachran, a sophomore, led the Vikings with a .475 batting average in conference play. She tied for the league lead in runs (20), tied for second in hits (28) and triples (two), and ranked fourth in on-base percentage (.500).

Portland State's season ended last weekend at the NCAA regional in Seattle. The Vikings finished 34-18.
