HONORS
YMCA honors Volunteers of Year
YMCA of Snohomish County honored its volunteers at a breakfast on May 11 at the Everett Golf and Country Club.
The community event honored the contribution of volunteers who support the YMCA of Snohomish County.
Those honored were among more than 2,473 volunteers who donated a total of 48,168 hours to help with policies, programs and activities.

Awards at crime prevention meeting
The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office hosted the Washington State Crime Prevention Association's annual spring training conference in Everett in April.
The three-day event was attended by about 75 members of the law enforcement community from across the state and as far away as British Columbia and California.
Snohomish County Sheriff John Lovick received the Law Enforcement Crime Prevention Unit of the Year award.
Sgt. Darrell O'Neill received the Sandy Richard's Crime Prevention Practitioner of the Year award.
Zonta honors Cheryle Earnheart
Zonta Club of Everett has honored Cheryle Earnheart as the recipient of their 2011 Virginia Gullikson Award.
Earnheart has been involved with Providence Regional Medical Center. She has also been active in hospice, Cocoon House, YMCA, Camp Fire USA Snohomish County Council, Snohomish County Children's Museum, Everett Parks Foundation, Arts Council of Snohomish County and Healthy Communities.
The Virginia Gullikson Award is named for a Zonta member and well-known Snohomish County resident who spent her life helping others.
Camp Fire honors teen members
Camp Fire USA's highest youth award, the WoHeLo, was awarded on May 22 to three teens from Camp Fire USA Snohomish County Council.
Dalanie Church, Stephanie Church and Laurel Clayton were presented their awards at Cedar Cross United Methodist Church in Mill Creek. They all have been in Camp Fire for 11 years.
Dalanie is the daughter of Bill and Kathleen Church of Mill Creek and is a junior at Henry M. Jackson High School.
Stephanie, daughter of Dan and Janet Church of Snohomish, is a senior at Glacier Peak High School.
Laurel is the daughter of Dan and Carol Clayton of Snohomish. She is also a senior at Glacier Peak High School.
Created in 1962, the WoHeLo Award represents the highest achievement for young people in Camp Fire USA.
The word "Wohelo" comes from the first two letters of each of the words: work, health and love. It was coined as the watchword of Camp Fire by founder Charlotte Gulick.

Foundation awards grants to nonprofits
The Greater Everett Community Foundation awarded more than $57,000 in grants to 31 nonprofits in Snohomish County.
The grants were from the foundation's four donor funds: The Anne and Mary Arts and Environmental Education Fund, the Jeannie and David Brenner Fund, the Coastal Community Bank Employee Giving Fund and the Human Services Endowment Fund in honor of Bob Drewel.
Some of the nonprofits that received the grants included Cascade Land Conservancy, Penny Creek PTA, Seattle Shakespeare Company, Schack Art Center, Service Education and Adventure, St. Vincent de Paul, Stilly Snohomish, ARC of Snohomish County, Quilceda Community Services, Housing Hope, Interfaith Association and Sky Valley Food Bank.
The next grant application deadline is September 30, 2011. Applications are available at www. greatereverettcf.org.
Breakfast funds help quake victims
The Edmonds Knights of Columbus donated its monthly pancake breakfast funds to the Japan YMCA Disaster Relief Fund.
According to Shigeru Shimada, national general secretary of the YMCAs of Japan, the YMCA of the USA is helping in establishing the Japan YMCA Relief Fund.
The Japanese chapters of YMCA are providing food and shelter to survivors and day care and recreation to refugees of the nuclear threat zone. They are also preparing for long-term rehabilitation of impacted communities.
Snohomish Garden Club scholarships
The Snohomish Garden Club announced its 2011 scholarships and grants, awarded to local students, schools and community groups to promote horticultural education and activity.
Scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded to:
Hunter Lundstrom of Glacier Peak High School. Lundstrom will attend WSU and will major in Landscape Architecture.
Hilary Hunsaker of Snohomish High School has been accepted at Brigham Young University and plans to major in Horticulture.
Five grants also were awarded to these local schools and groups:
Glacier Peak High School and Little Cedars Elementary School: $200
Little Cedars Elementary School: $600
Emerson Elementary School: $700
Girl Scout Troop 392: $200
Snohomish Boys & Girls Club: $300.
