Honey, pure water and yeast are the basic ingredients of mead, probably the oldest fermented beverage in the world.

Some of the best modern mead, or honeywine, is produced at the Sky River Meadery in Sultan, and the company has the awards to prove it.

At the recent West Coast Wine Competition, Sky River, www.skyriverbrewing.com, took home three awards: a best in class, and gold and bronze medals. Nearly 1,100 entries came from the western United States, British Columbia, South America, New Zealand and Australia.

"We couldn't be happier. It's an honor to be included on such a prestigious list of wines," said Denice Ingalls, Sky River owner and winemaker.

Sky River's Semi-Sweet Mead was awarded a gold medal, as well as best in class. The Semi-Sweet is one of the true meads, made completely from honey, made at Sky River. A bronze was awarded to the Raspberry Honey Wine, a new product. Judges included sommeliers, restaurateurs, winemakers and wine writers.
