Peter and Paul from ‘60s folk trio to headline Evergreen State Fair lineup

MONROE -- Even though Mary Travers died in September 2009, Peter and Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary continue to delight audiences.

Along with the power pop band Cheap Trick and the sibling country group The Band Perry, Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey are scheduled to headline the Evergreen State Fair's music lineup.

Tickets for the concerts and for several motorsport events go on sale at 10 a.m. this morning.

Peter, Paul and Mary, a folk trio from the 1960s, are well known for their popular songs, "If I Had a Hammer," "Puff, the Magic Dragon," and "I'm Leaving on a Jet Plane."

They're credited with helping to bring folk music into the pop scene and for their social advocacy.

Travers' sweet voice and striking, flowing blond hair were a centerpiece of the act. She died of complications from leukemia treatment.

Her bandmates continue in her memory, they said.

The Evergreen State Fair is scheduled from Aug. 25 to Sept. 5.

In addition to the musical acts, the grandstand entertainment also will feature several nights of motorsports, including a demolition derby, monster truck crush and speed car races.

Prices range from $10 to $30 and are available at www.evergreenfair.org.

Admission to the fair will not be included in the grandstand ticket price, a new policy this year.

Motorsport events begin at 6 p.m. Concerts are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
