Snohomish County Vikings lose to Bellingham Bulldogs
A depleted Snohomish County Vikings football team did the best it could but ultimately was no match for the Bellingham Bulldogs.
Bellingham seized control in the second quarter and coasted to a 42-19 victory over Snohomish County in a Pacific Football League game July 9 at Civic Field in Bellingham.
“We were very shorthanded between injuries and a few folks who didn't make the trip,” said Vikings coach Wes Fischer. Some guys played both ways, some were out of position; it was just a tough day.
“I was pleased with the effort. I think we've got a good group of core guys.”
Quarterback Erik Simonson threw three touchdown passes to lead Snohomish County, which wrapped up the season at 1-9. Simonson connected on a 75-yard touchdown to Paul Won and then found Markiese Smith with a 42-yard scoring strike in the first quarter. Simonson also threw a 32-yard touchdown to Kevin Karpinski in the third quarter.
The offensive line struggled throughout the season but came together well against the Bulldogs.
“We've added some people on the line who are going to be back next year,” Fischer said. “That line is starting to look pretty good.”
Won ran for 97 yards, while teammate Patrick Sullivan finished with 123 receiving yards. If Simonson returns, he'll likely have to battle starting quarterback Hal Bisnett for the starting job next year. Bisnett was sidelined due to a leg injury in May.
“That's a 1-2 combination that should be very good,” Fischer said. “They are both very tall about 6-5 and over 200 pounds. They are strong kids and both are pretty fast. They are not afraid to run the ball when they need to. They get the ball out of their hands pretty quick.
Turnovers, however, hurt the Vikings against Bellingham as Simonson was picked off twice and Snohomish County also fumbled away the ball.
“They just capitalized on everything,” Fischer said.
The loss marked the end of a disappointing season for Snohomish County, who opened with a victory over Bellingham but then dropped its next nine contests.
“It was a learning experience for everybody,” Fischer said. “We competed throughout the entire season. Every game was close.”
The Vikings were inside the Bulldogs' 20-yard line three times but came away with no points.
“I felt like the guys were competing the whole time,” Fischer said of the season. “We've got a core group of guys coming back who are going to be make us a contender for next year.”
