Accomplishments
In late June, the Port of Everett and its customers celebrated the 1,000th barge carrying aerospace parts for the Boeing Company's 747, 767 and 777 airplane models. The first barge arrived in the Port of Everett's shipping terminals in 1993 carrying 777 airplane parts in oversized containers. Over the years, the business has grown to support 777, 767 and 747 models. "The 1,000th barge is a key point in the port's steady transition from older economies to aerospace and other specialty commodities," Port Commissioner Mark Wolken said during a ceremony on June 23.
The world-champion Express Clydesdales, representing Express Employment Professionals, recently received the honor of escorting Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, and his wife, Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, in an Express stagecoach to a private reception in Calgary, Alberta. The Express Clydesdales have participated in many parades including Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Calgary Stampede Parade. The Everett Express Employment Professionals franchise opened in 1983 and is at 4015 Rucker Ave.
Mill Creek resident Navi Singh was a winner of Ford's "Focus Rally: America" contest. He received a 2012 Focus Titanium at Bickford Motors in Snohomish earlier this month. Singh won the Focus by supporting a Seattle-based team that beat out five other national teams while traveling across the country in the interactive online road rally competition earlier this year.
The Port of Everett's longshoremen recently loaded a BBC Charter ship with Lampson crane parts and a large tugboat destined for Australia. This is just one of many project cargoes handled by the Port this year.
Fluke Corp.'s Fluke 381 clamp meter has been named a gold award winner in the tools category in the ACHR-The NEWS eighth annual Dealer Design Awards. The award recognizes excellence in HVACR product design. The Fluke product was one of 127 entries.

Taxable retail sales increased 1.5 percent to $23 billion statewide during the first quarter of 2011 over the same period the previous year, according to a recent state Department of Revenue report. Retail trade increased 4.2 percent to $10.7 billion compared to the first quarter of 2010. Retail trade is a subset of all taxable retail sales that includes retailers but excludes services and construction. In Snohomish County, taxable retail sales were down 1.7 percent to $2.2 billion in the first quarter. Retail trade increased 3.3 percent to $1.1 billion.
New business
Hobby Lobby Stores will open a 56,000 square foot store at 60th Avenue W. and Highway 99 in Lynnwood later this year. The store is the chain's third in Washington and will employ 35 to 50 people. Based in Oklahoma City, Hobby Lobby offers 65,000 crafting and home decor products. Departments include floral, fabric, needlework, framing, baskets, home accents, arts and crafts, warable art, jewlry and scrapbooking supplies.
New products
Fluke Networks has announced a new version of its Network Time Machine, with new capabilities to make it an all-in-one, plug-and-play appliance that provides instant identification of network versus server problems and root cause analysis of network and application problems. The software, a free upgrade for existing customers with an active support agreement, is available immediately.

The local Boeing Machinists union is hosting its seventh annual Bill Baker Memorial Steel and Wheels SuperShow from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Aug. 13 at the union hall, 8729 Airport Road, Everett. The hot rods and custom motorcycles show is a fundraiser for Guide Dogs of America. Along with the car show, there will be food and live music. Entries are $20 if you pre-register, $25 the day of the event. Forms are available at the local union hall.
