Traffic signals to help pedestrians at Everett bus stops

EVERETT -- Getting off the bus at two busy Everett locations should soon get a little bit safer.

The city is planning to install traffic signals to aid pedestrians at Evergreen Way and Casino Road, and near the Everett Clinic north of 41st Street and Rucker Avenue.

The goal is to make it safer for people using the Swift Bus Rapid Transit stations at those locations.

One signal will enhance what is now only a striped crosswalk across Casino Road.

That crosswalk is a problem because many drivers aren't stopping for pedestrians, said city engineer Ryan Sass.

At the second location, workers will install a signal and new crosswalk across Rucker Avenue in front of the clinic. The project will include two traffic signals, curb extensions, ramps and drainage work.

Even though an intersection with a light and crosswalk is about a block away, many people aren't using it, Sass said.

The budget for the work is $351,860 -- all of it paid for by a state grant.

Work is expected to begin in early fall and be mostly finished by the end of the year.
