Whidbey Island marine park closes for renovations
Whidbey Island -- Possession Point State Park, a marine park on the southern tip of Whidbey Island, will be closed for two to three months beginning Monday, according to the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission.
The state plans to replace a seawall at the park. The work will include removing the plank bulkhead and replacing it with a buried rock trench to allow better long-shore transport of beach materials, according to project manager Phillip Jensen.
"This will make it better for the beach and help the natural process to happen," Jensen said.
The project will cost approximately $400,000 and is funded by a FEMA Disaster Assistance Grant. Due to stormwater issues, the park was declared disaster in February 2006.
"It's taken us this long to get it planned, funded, designed, approved and contracted," Jensen said.
