Seahawks sign first-round pick James Carpenter, LB Leroy Hill

In a rather surprising move, the Seahawks are bringing back Leroy Hill. The linebacker, once a starter with seemingly a lot of potential, battled injuries as well as legal troubles in recent years, and prior to last season the Seahawks restructured his contract to make him a free agent this year. At the time, the assumption was that he was done in Seattle. Instead, he's back, most likely to provide depth to a linebacker group that lost its top backup, Will Herring, in free agency. Though knowing Pete Carroll (if you haven't heard, he likes competition) Hill will get a shot to do more than just be a backup.

Less surprising is the news that Seattle has reached a deal with first-round pick James Carpenter, who is expected to immediately compete for the starting job at RT. One of the nice things about the new CBA (well, nice if you're not a rookie) is that rookie contracts are now pretty firmly slotted based on draft status. That should mean an end to the long rookie holdouts we've seen in camp in recent years.

Seattle also made official the release of five players: DB James Brindley, DT Barrett Moen, LB Joe Pawelek, T Stacy Andrews, C Chris White
