Training camp notes, Seafair Saturday addition

Hopefully all of you are enjoying what is slowly becoming a sunny Saturday, and not sitting at home reading this blog, but for those of you dying to know how Seahawks practice went today, here are a few quick highlights:

While Sidney Rice had his share of nice catches (again), it was the rest of the receivers stealing the show Saturday. Pat Williams made a catch near the goal line that looked for all the world like an interception. On a low pass, safety Josh Pinkard dove over Williams and appeared to come down with the ball, but somehow William emerged with the catch. Former Husky Isaiah Stanback, who continues to look good a year removed from a torn Achilles tendon, had a few nice catches on deep balls, as did Golden Tate. But no catch Saturday was better than the one made by undrafted rookie Ricardo Lockette (aka Lockette the Rocket), who out-jumped Brandon Browner and reached over the 6-foot-4 corner to haul in a pass from Josh Portis.

And speaking of Portis, Pete Carroll had plenty of nice things to say about the undrafted rookie. Portis is a long ways from being NFL ready, but Portis sounds like a player Carroll plans to keep around for a while.

–Defensive end Raheem Brock was on the field for his first practice since re-signing with the Seahawks. After, he said he plans on a big follow up to his nine-sack season in 2010: “I need to make a Pro Bowl. I feel like I’ve done everything else. I’ve been to a couple of Super Bowls, I’ve won a Super Bowl.”

–Carroll noted that FB Michael Robinson got his weight up to 240 pounds in the offseason to better handle the rigors of the position. Robinson played closer to 220 pounds last year, which was his first moving from running back to fullback.

–Oh yeah, Nate Robinson was here today. Unfortunately the NBA guard and Seattle native wasn’t on the field in pads for a tryout, but rather he was standing on the sideline watching. Robinson, who played one season of football at Washington before focusing on hoops, had a playful back and forth with Carroll earlier in the week that ended with Carroll telling the guard to come out for a tryout.

–A new sight at training camp this season is an old-school form of punishment. When players were flagged for false starts Saturday, they had to go jog a lap around the field. Among those punished were C Max Unger, LT Russell Okung and TE Zach Miller.

–Jameson Konz, who moved from tight end to defensive earlier this week, continues to show promise as a pass rusher. Konz still has an uphill battle to make the roster, but the fact that he’s having an impact is a testament to the athleticism that made him attractive to Seattle in last year’s draft despite a less-than-stellar on-field resume.

–I know I’ve pointed this out before, but the move to NT seems to be suiting Brandon Mebane well. Once again Saturday, he was in the backfield frequently to stuff run plays and harass quarterbacks.
