MUKILTEO -- The city was ranked the ninth best place to live in the United States by Money Magazine.

"As West Coast towns go, Mukilteo (pronounced MUCK-ill-TEE-oh) is in good economic shape," the magazine wrote. "Bank-owned homes represent a small fraction of houses on the market, and area employers, including Boeing, are hiring again."

The magazine also said that Mukilteo homes are affordable by Seattle standards, the schools are good, and it has "a killer location right on Puget Sound."

It also noted Mukilteo's new community center and the makeover of Lighthouse Park.

Mayor Joe Marine noted that the city was the only one west of Colorado to crack the top 10.

"We're very happy," he said, adding that the city was listed at number 10 in the same survey two years ago and number 69 in 2007.

Marine also pointed out that according to the survey, among the top 100 cities, Mukilteo has higher than average home prices and lower than average property taxes -- "which means it's a good deal to live in Mukilteo," he said.

Mukilteo has 20,300 residents and unemployment is at 8.2 percent, according to the magazine.

The magazine also noted two other Washington towns, Sammamish, which it ranked 15th, and Newcastle, ranked 18th.
