Community Roundup: Robinson to row at the world championships
Katherine Robinson, 24, of Everett has qualified to compete in the 2011 World Rowing Championships as a member of the U.S. women's lightweight quad scull.
The championships begin Aug. 28 in Bled, Slovenia.
Robinson, along with fellow rowers Lindsey Hochman of Seattle, Nicole Dinion of Falls Church, Va., and Hillary Saeger of Dedham, Mass, won the women's lightweight quad competition at the recent 2011 World Rowing Championships Trials on Mercer Lake in New Jersey.
A 2005 graduate of Archbishop Murphy High School, Robinson was a member of the Everett Rowing Association during her high school years. She was part of the ERA eight-oared shell that placed second at nationals in 2005. She went on to a four-year rowing career at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass.
In her senior year, the Ephs won the 2009 NCAA Division III national championship and Robinson was named an All-American.
That same year, Robinson captured a silver medal at the World Under-23 Championships in Racice, Czech Republic, as a member of the United States' women's lightweight quad scull.
"I didn't plan on rowing after college after such an amazing four years with the (Williams) team," Robinson said on the school's website, "and with the guidance of (former Ephs coach) Justin Moore, I decided to see how far I could take it."
Horsemanship
Parris Rice of Snohomish placed third in the Showmanship at Halter competition last week at the 2011 American Quarter Horse Youth Association World Championship Show in Oklahoma City.
Rice showed Javah Mon, a 1998 bay gelding. Javah Mon is owned by Carolyn Rice of Somis, Calif.
Showmanship at halter tests an exhibitor's ability to prepare and present his or her horse. A total of 192 entrants competed in the event in Oklahoma City.
The championships, billed as "the orld's largest single-breed youth world championship horse show," drew 2,350 competitors from the United States, Canada, Venezuela, Germany, New Zealand and Australia, organizers said.
