Everett's Robinson wins bronze at world rowing championships
BLED, Slovenia -- Katherine Robinson of Everett, a 2005 graduate of Archbishop Murphy High School and a product of the Everett Rowing Association, received a bronze medal Saturday for a third-place finish with the United States women's lightweight quadruple sculls team at the 2011 World Rowing Championships
The Americans finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:33.91, barely holding off a late surge from Italy, which finished in 6:33.92.
Great Britain won the gold medal and China received the silver medal.
Robinson attended Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., and as a senior in 2009 her women's eight won the NCAA Division III national championship and she was an All-American. The same year Robinson received a silver medal at the World Under-23 Championships.
Joining Robinson on the U.S. team Saturday were Lindsey Hochman of Seattle, Nicole Dinion of Falls Church, Va., and Hillary Saeger of Dedham, Mass.
The American quad had a disappointing start at the World Championships, finishing third to Australia and Italy in their opening race. The U.S. team came through the repechage, finishing second to China to reach Saturday's final.
Still, a medal was in question until the final few yards, with Italy making a late surge. The Americans needed a surge of their own to hold onto third place.
"It was like a heart-and-soul kind of move," Robinson told the USRowing website. "There is nothing else after this. We didn't think about anything else. It was very much in the moment, getting the blades in and leaving nothing behind."
On Friday, Ursula Grobler of Lake Stevens finished fourth in the women's lightweight single. She started well, but faded late in the race to finish behind rowers from Brazil, Switzerland and Germany.
