How much playing time will Alex Liddi get? And, who's Steve Delabar?

While the Mariners keep trying to figure out the Angels the next three days in Anaheim, I’m home in Snohomish County trying to conquer weeds in the back yard. When we get together again late this week, the Mariners will introduce a couple of new players to Safeco Field.

Among the latest minor league callups, third baseman Alex Liddi and pitcher Steve Delabar will suit up as Mariners for the first time (Michael Saunders also is up for the second time this year).

Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune covered the Tacoma Rainiers’ final games and wrote this nice piece on the Mariners’ callups, including some interesting stuff on a guy a lot of fans have never heard of – Delabar.

It’ll be interesting to see (1) how much playing time Liddi will get considering the job rookie Kyle Seager has done at third base, and (2) what he’ll do with that playing time, particularly his at-bats.

A lot of guys in Liddi’s shoes – up for the first time – tend to spend most of their nights on the bench simply being exposed to life in the majors just so they aren’t so awe-struck when the call comes next year. No surprise if that’s what happens with him the rest of this month.

But there’s also the intrigue of Liddi’s powerful bat, which produced 30 home runs and 121 RBI this year at Class AAA Tacoma. He could come up here, get 20-30 at-bats and either impress everyone with his hitting or not hit a lick. It would be foolish to read too much into either scenario because the major league sample size would be so small. That’s why the Mariners have spent so much time this season running rookies like Seager, Mike Carp, Casper Wells, Dustin Ackley and Carlos Peguero out there on a day-after-day basis, because they feel it’s important to give those guys at least 150 plate appearances in order to better evaluate them.
