If you think organic food is a big trend in Washington, you’re absolutely right.
Indeed, organic food seems to be a trend that is here to stay, according to the Tilth Producers of Washington, a chapter of Washington Tilth Association, an organic farming and sustainable agriculture organization.
This week, Sept. 11 to 17, is officially Washington Organic Week, according to a proclamation from Gov. Chris Gregoire, and tilth wants you to know that Washington is leading the way with organic produce, like really leading the way.
Washington, according to Tilth, is the No. 1-producing state of organic apples, cherries, pears, onions, sweet corn, snap beans and green peas.
“One of the few sectors to buck the economic downturn, organic food sales have risen 3.5 percent over the last two years, while conventional food sales have remained flat. Washington’s organic producers grow more than $230 million in organic crops annually, supporting our local economy, while supplying healthy, delicious produce, and keeping our soil and water free from harmful synthetic pesticides and fertilizers.”
Well, that’s cool, even if it is part of a PR campaign.
That’s a big reduction in pesticide pollution, a lot fewer farm workers getting sick from chemicals and, I hope, a great reduction in the contaminants on our plates.
