Close to decision time on whether Figgins will play again this season

The end is either here or near for Mariners third baseman Chone Figgins’ season.

Manager Eric Wedge said this afternoon that Figgins would put in a full workout during batting practice today, and that would help determine if he’ll play again. Figgins has been out since Aug. 2 because of a strained right hip flexor.

“I had a long talk with him yesterday,” Wedge said. “He’s going to really get after it this pregame and do everything, and we’ll learn the next couple of days whether or not he’s going to be able to come back and play or if we’re just going to shut him down.”

Wedge has said for a few weeks that it would be nice for Figgins to play a few games so he can go into the offseason knowing he is over the injury.

Nothing will change the misery that this season – again – has been for Figgins. He’s batting .188 with a .241 on-base percentage and .243 slugging percentage and has been an even bigger shadow of the player he was last year (.259/.340/.306 after a strong second half).

The Mariners have Figgins under contract the next two years ($9 million in 2012 and $8 million in 2013), so something’s got to change – either Figgins’ performance or the Mariners’ tolerance for having that on the team.

A few other notes:

• First baseman Justin Smoak remains out because of a mild right groin strain, and those thoughts that he would play this weekend are looking a little too hopeful.

“He’s still day-to-day, still pretty sore,” Wedge said. “He’s still getting worked on, so we’ll try again tomorrow.”

Mike Carp is starting today at first base.

• Mike Curto, radio voice of the Class AAA Tacoma Rainiers, is joining Rick Rizzs in the Mariners’ radio booth tonight and tomorrow. Also on the radio front, tomorrow’s game will be carried on KTTH (770 AM) because the Seahawks will air on ESPN 710 AM.
