Snohomish County Master Gardeners

There are more than 300 volunteer Master Gardeners in Snohomish County.
They donate about 25,000 hours of their horticultural expertise and hard work every year.
To keep things going, the master gardeners accept about 60 new recruits every winter into an extensive training program through the Washington State University Snohomish County extension.
In the spring, the newbies go on to teach science-based gardening and environmental stewardship practices out in the community.
Not only do master gardeners get innumerable chances to boost their own gardening knowledge, they get to help others while training under seasoned veterans of the 35-year-old MG program.
If you have time, quite a lot of time, to volunteer, and you yearn to know more, a lot more, about gardening, this is the program for you.
Applications for the 2012 master gardener training program are due Oct. 31.
Training will be from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursdays Jan. 5 to March 29 at the WSU extension offices at McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett.
April 5 and 12 will be make-up days if there are weather-related cancellations.
Trainees pay $225 to cover the cost of printed training materials, professional speakers and online training.
Homework time averages 3 to 5 hours per week.
Trainees learn horticulture and pest management, including how to identify and troubleshoot common garden challenges and how to offer environmentally responsible solutions.
WSU faculty, staff and local specialists provide university-level training. In return, trainees assist local extension personnel in providing information and education to the community as volunteers.
Trainees are asked to donate a minimum of 60 hours each year to the program for two years, 120 volunteer hours total, at plant clinics, demonstration gardens and on special projects and approved outreach programs.
