New ramps to I-5 in Lynnwood open

The new ramps from I-405 and Highway 525 to southbound I-5 in Lynnwood are now open. The ramps were opened at midnight Monday, five hours ahead of schedule, according to the state Department of Transportation.

The ramps were closed all weekend, starting Friday night, while crews finished the new ramps and connected them to the southbound lanes.

Now the focus shifts to preparing to open the new off-ramp to 196th Street SW.

This week drivers will encounter changes at the merge area between the on-ramps and the exit to 196th Street SW. A temporary, painted island and pylons will separate mainline traffic from on-ramp traffic and traffic heading to 196th Street SW for five days while work is finished on the ramp.

During this interim period, drivers exiting to 196th Street SW should move into the right lane prior to the I-405 interchange to avoid missing the exit.

The new off-ramp to 196th Street SW is scheduled to open at 5 a.m. Friday. The access point for the new ramp will be one mile north of the existing exit point.

The work is part of a $33.7 million project to provide more separation for merging and exiting drivers at this point of southbound I-5.
