Community roundup: Arlington shooter chosen for paralympic camp
McKenna Dahl of Arlington was one of seven students with physical disabilities from the United States chosen to attend the International Paralympic Youth Camp in Graft-de Rijp, The Netherlands.
Dahl, a 15-year-old sophomore at Lakewood High School, participates in the sport of shooting.
The camp, which began Saturday and continues through Sunday, is part of the International Paralympic Committee's (IPC) Youth Development Initiative, and is intended to raise participation around the world for youth with disabilities. Dahl was born with amyoplasia arthrogryposis, a condition in which a newborn child lacks muscle and suffers from joint deformity.
Dahl and the other six Americans were selected based on several criteria, including sports accomplishments, academic achievement and a written essay.
This fall Dahl is scheduled to compete in international shooting events in Atlanta and Sydney, Australia. She hopes to represent the U.S. at the 2012 Paralympics in London.

Gymnasts set record
Gymnasts from Snohomish County helped set a world record on Sept. 17.
The 42 gymnasts who gathered at GYMagine Gymnastics in Mukilteo were among 20,478 athletes from 100 gymnastic clubs around the nation who combined to break the world record for simultaneous handstands.
At 10 a.m. PDT, the 20,478 gymnasts kicked up into handstands, breaking the old mark of 2,402 set by gymnasts in 2005 in Melbourne, Australia, to promote the World Gymnastics Championships.
"We originally set the record of 1,072, here in Indianapolis, in July 2005 as part of the run-up to the 2005 Visa Championships," Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, said in a press release. "Bringing the title back to the USA is a great way to celebrate National Gymnastics Day across the U.S. and help build awareness and support for gymnastics."
