Snohomish, Jackson win Wesco 4A cross country titles

MARYSVILLE - Led by their diminutive freshman Bri Gibson, the Snohomish Panthers girls cross country team is back on top.
Gibson won the Class 4A girls race at the Wesco Divisional Cross Country meet in a time of 19 minutes, 9 seconds at Lakewood High School Saturday
and the Panthers placed five runners in the top 13 to edge Jackson 46-44 for the team title. Hailey Nyquist, Hannah Berntson and Shelby Mills all finished just 3 seconds apart at 8th, 9th and 10th, respectively, for Snohomish.
Jackson was led by freshman Brooke Kingma, who was second behind Gibson, and Jessica Rawlins and Kelsey Fruland, who finished third and fifth, respectively.
The top eight teams and top 40 runners advance to next Saturday's Wesco-KingCo bi-district meet at Lincoln Park in Seattle, where runners will advance to state.
On the boys side, Jackson placed five runners in the top-10 and scored just 33 points to easily take the Wesco 4A boys crown. The next closest team was Snohomish with 92 points. The Timberwolves were led by the trio of seniors Collin Holman, Jacob Atkinson and Nick Calacat, who finished third, fifth and sixth, respectively. Lake Stevens junior Mason Nicol won the boys race in a time of 16:17, 7 seconds faster than the next runner, Cascade's Steven Statham.
